What does healing your gut mean

Gut health problems looks different for everyone, which makes sense considering we’re all different, each of us out here doing our own thing! The more daily and apparent symptoms of gut health problems often looks like:

    • Digestive troubles
    • Brain fog
    • Headaches
    • Anxiety
    • Low mood / depression
    • Body pains and aches
    • Lack of focus, drive, or motivation

The list goes on and on, but I think you get the gist. The biggest concern when it comes to having gut health issues is that with how busy we all are on the day-to-day, we simply become accustomed to managing these conditions on a daily basis and don’t slow down enough to become aware of an underlying condition that could be causing the discomfort: Inflammation.

    What is Inflammation?

Inflammation is totally normal and is really a natural response from the body to protect and heal itself against harm. The problem arises when low-grade inflammation is present for an extended period of time, then something called chronic inflammation occurs.

Chronic inflammation causes a whole slew of other concerns and issues that do end up heavily impacting our ability to have a happy, healthy and productive day. Low-grade chronic inflammation is a major contributor to a number of health conditions and chronic diseases ranging from metabolic conditions, neurological, cardiovascular, respiratory illnesses, pain management, gastrointestinal inflammation and mental health stability.

You can hear more of my own personal experience with inflammation due to chronic pain over on the About Me page. Truthfully, it’s a daily challenge that I share more about on a personal level with my email subscribers, so subscribe away if you’d like to join me in the journey of ups, downs and everything in-between to support a healthier and happier mind and body for all of us in the years to come.

The role of the gut microbiome plays in chronic conditions and mental health is astronomical; and only growing by the day. If you have been experiencing some recent concerns and think they may be due to inflammation, not only should you definitely try out this smoothie recipe, but there’s also a number of ways you can begin to approach and heal your gut from the inside out. Check out some of the tips below.

Tips on how to reduce inflammation and heal your gut

    1. Reduce your stress levels as much as possible!

I cannot stress this one enough (pun entirely intended, but seriously). Stress is MAJORLY linked to inflammation, so finding ways to get out of that fight-flight-freeze response is going to be crucial for you to find relief and to manage future functional digestive issues better.

Try and find an activity that really allows you to relax deep back into your body. Whether it’s going for a walk, breathing exercises, yoga, meditation, maybe some self care like taking a bubble bath, journaling or even getting creative with a coloring book while you watch your favorite tv show.

These practices are key to long-term health, so finding outlets or small pockets of time and taking just a moment to yourself is going to be so beneficial in the long-run.

    2. Get the right nutrients for YOU

Making sure your body is getting (and actually absorbing/using) the right nutrients is vital in fighting inflammation and improving overall health.

Routine blood work will help show what you may be deficient in, but in addition to eating a healthy diet rich in color, vitamins and minerals. Anti-inflammatory Omega 3-foods or supplements, Vitamin D, B vitamins, and Magnesium are all helpful in fighting inflammation, balancing the gut, and calming the body.

    3. Ensure proper probiotics

Probiotics can not only help promote healthy gut bacteria, but can also fight bad gut bacteria. Taking a probiotic, eating fermented foods such as kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, and miso can be an excellent addition to your diet by improving digestion, immunity, and aiding weight-loss.

    4. Try an elimination diet!

I’m not the biggest fan of the word “diet” (as this is really about honing in on your bodies cues and getting back in touch with what’s working and what’s not), but elimination diets can be SO helpful in narrowing down those foods that you may be a bit more sensitive to than others. For me, cutting out gluten and dairy was the ticket.

If you suspect that certain foods might be triggering inflammation in your body, it may be worth removing the food group for 2-3 weeks to observe how your body responds without it. After the 2-3 weeks, begin re-introducing the food and take note on how your body reacts.

Dairy, soy, gluten, eggs, and nightshade vegetables are all common culprits to causing an inflamed gut.

    5. Eat anti-inflammatory foods

So, what are gut healing foods? The foods that cause inflammation probably won’t surprise you. Reducing intake of highly processed foods, dairy, refined carbs, sugar, gluten, artificial sweeteners, and alcohol as they all top the list of major contributors to an unhealthy gut.

That said, I made a food guide for you to check out all of the foods that help heal your gut and which ones are the biggest culprit when it comes to having an inflamed gut.

Download the Food Guide below for a quick resource on what to opt for and what to avoid the next time you’re at the grocery store!
